Ping, Jitter and Packet Loss Explained for Gaming and Video Calls

Download speed is not everything. Ping, jitter and packet loss decide whether games lag and calls freeze. Here is what good numbers look like.

A 500 Mbps connection can still make an online game feel sluggish or a video call freeze. That's because speed measures how much data you can move. Games and calls care about how quickly and steadily it moves.

Ping (response time)

Ping is how long a tiny message takes to reach a server and come back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better.

Distance to the server matters most, which is why speed tests pick a nearby server. Wi-Fi adds a little too, especially with a weak signal.

Jitter (stability)

Jitter is how much ping jumps around from one moment to the next. A steady 40 ms often feels better than a ping that swings between 15 and 90 ms, because apps can't predict when the next packet will arrive.

  • Under 10 ms: steady
  • 10–30 ms: usually fine for calls
  • Over 30 ms: choppy audio, rubber-banding in games

Crowded Wi-Fi channels and busy routers are common causes of jitter.

Packet loss (dropped data)

Packet loss is the share of data that never arrives. Even 1–2% causes robotic voices on calls and characters that teleport in games. On a healthy home connection it should be close to 0%.

What causes bad numbers at home

  1. A weak Wi-Fi signal. Retransmissions add delay and jitter. Move closer or use a cable.
  2. Someone else downloading. Uploads in particular (cloud backups, video uploads) can clog a connection. This is sometimes called bufferbloat.
  3. A crowded channel. Your router waits its turn more often. See finding the best channel.
  4. A distant game server. Pick a server region near you.

How to check yours
