What the numbers mean
Download is how fast things arrive: video, web pages, app updates. It is the number providers advertise. Upload is how fast things leave: your side of a video call, photos backing up, files you send. Most home plans give far less upload than download, which is normal.
Response time is the round trip for a tiny message, in milliseconds. Stability is how much it wobbles. These two decide whether a call feels smooth or robotic, and they matter more for gaming than raw speed does.
How to get an honest result
- Pause big downloads and streams on other devices first, or they take a share of the result.
- Test twice: once where you usually sit, once next to the router. A big gap between them means the problem is your Wi-Fi coverage, not your plan.
- Test at a busy time (evening) and a quiet one. Cable and shared connections often slow down when the neighbourhood is online.

What is a good internet speed?
For most homes, 100 Mbps download is comfortable: several people can stream, game and video call at the same time. 25 Mbps handles one or two people well. Upload matters for video calls and cloud backups; 10 Mbps up is usually enough.
Why is my result lower than the speed I pay for?
Plans are sold as "up to" speeds, and Wi-Fi rarely delivers the full amount: walls, distance and other devices all take a share. Test once standing next to your router. If that result is close to your plan, your Wi-Fi coverage is the thing to improve, not your plan.
What do response time and stability mean?
Response time is how long a tiny message takes to reach the internet and come back, in milliseconds. Stability is how much that varies. Low numbers on both are what make video calls and games feel smooth, even when download speed is modest.
Is my result stored?
An anonymous summary (the speeds, your provider and country) is added to our public broadband data so people can see real speeds by provider. It is never linked to you, and you can untick the sharing box before you test.
