How to Find the Best Wi-Fi Channel (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

A crowded Wi-Fi channel slows everyone on it. Here is how channels work, which ones to use on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and how to find the quietest one near you.

Think of Wi-Fi channels as lanes on a road. Every network nearby picks a lane. When lots of networks share yours, they take turns, and everyone slows down. Moving to a quieter lane is one of the few free speed boosts left.

2.4 GHz: use 1, 6 or 11

On the 2.4 GHz band, channels overlap. In North America there are 11 channels, but only three don't overlap each other: 1, 6 and 11. Picking channel 3 or 9 doesn't escape the crowd; it collides with two lanes at once.

In Europe and many other regions, channels 1–13 are available, and some people use 1, 5, 9 and 13. If most of your neighbours use 1, 6 and 11, stick with those.

5 GHz: many more lanes

The 5 GHz band has far more channels and they don't overlap in the same way, so it's rarely crowded. Two things to know:

  • DFS channels (roughly 52–144) are shared with weather and airport radar. Routers may use them but must switch away if radar is detected, which can cause brief dropouts.
  • Channels 36–48 and 149–165 don't have that rule and are good defaults.

6 GHz: the empty motorway

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers add a 6 GHz band with lots of wide channels and very little interference, but only newer phones and laptops can use it. More in 2.4 vs 5 vs 6 GHz.

How to find the quietest channel

  1. Scan the networks around you. On Android, Wifify's Wi-Fi around you screen groups nearby networks by channel and counts neighbours per lane. Networks broadcast by your own router (such as a guest network) aren't counted against you.
  2. Look at how close they are. A neighbour with a strong signal matters more than one far away.
  3. Pick the lane with the fewest strong neighbours. Wifify suggests it for you.
  4. Change it in your router's settings. Usually under Wireless, Wi-Fi or Advanced settings. Wifify's "Open router settings" button takes you straight there.
  5. Test again. Run a speed test in the same spot before and after.

Channel width: 20, 40, 80 or 160 MHz

Width is how wide your lane is. Wider lanes carry more data but overlap more neighbours:

  • 2.4 GHz: use 20 MHz. Wider settings overlap almost every other network and often make things slower.
  • 5 GHz: 80 MHz is a good balance for most homes. 160 MHz is fastest but finds interference more easily.
  • 6 GHz: wide channels (160 MHz or 320 MHz on Wi-Fi 7) work well because the band is so empty.

Signs your channel is the problem

  • Speed is fine next to the router early in the morning but drops in the evening
  • Video calls stutter even though your signal is strong
  • Wifify's Network Doctor says your router is slow to respond while your signal is good
  • The Wi-Fi around you screen shows three or more strong neighbours in your lane

What if every channel is busy?

In a dense apartment building, every 2.4 GHz lane may be full. Then:

  1. Move your devices to 5 GHz (or 6 GHz if you have Wi-Fi 6E or 7).
  2. Plug stationary devices (TV, console, desktop) into Ethernet.
  3. Use a mesh system with wired connections between points, so the Wi-Fi only has to cover short distances.

Should you just use "Auto"?

Auto channel selection has improved, and many modern routers do a decent job. But some pick a channel once at start-up and never look again. If your Wi-Fi slows down at the same time every evening, check whether your channel has become crowded.
