2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz vs 6 GHz Wi-Fi: Which Should You Use?
2.4 GHz reaches farther, 5 GHz is faster, and 6 GHz is the least crowded. Here is when to use each Wi-Fi band at home, in plain words.
Most routers broadcast more than one Wi-Fi band. Sometimes they show up as two networks ("Home" and "Home 5G"), sometimes as one name that switches automatically. Each band has a job.

2.4 GHz: far-reaching
Lower frequencies travel farther and pass through walls better. The trade-off is less room for data and only three non-overlapping channels, so apartments can get crowded. Many smart-home gadgets only support 2.4 GHz.
5 GHz: fast
5 GHz carries much more data and has many more channels, so it's usually faster and less crowded. It loses strength through walls and floors faster, so two rooms away it can end up slower than 2.4 GHz.
6 GHz: the newest band
Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers can use 6 GHz: lots of space, very little interference and very high speeds. It needs a compatible router and a recent phone or laptop, and range is shorter again.
Which should your phone use?
- Same room as the router: 5 or 6 GHz.
- One or two walls away: usually 5 GHz; test both.
- Far end of the home or the garden: 2.4 GHz.
If your router uses one name for all bands ("band steering"), it decides for you. Most do a decent job; if a device keeps landing on the slow band, a separate 5 GHz network name can help.
