It's natural to wonder about a router humming away near a child's bed. This guide explains what's known in plain words, without scare stories and without brushing concerns aside.
What kind of "radiation" is Wi-Fi?
The word radiation covers very different things:
- Ionising radiation (X-rays, radon, nuclear) has enough energy to damage DNA. It's genuinely harmful at high doses.
- Non-ionising radiation includes radio, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, Bluetooth and visible light. It doesn't have enough energy to break chemical bonds. At high enough power it can warm tissue, which is what safety limits are built around.
What the safety limits say
The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) sets exposure guidelines used by many countries (ICNIRP radiofrequency guidance). For the public, the limits sit far below the level where any heating effect has been seen, and they apply to everyone, children included.
UK health authorities have measured Wi-Fi equipment used in schools and concluded that exposures are small in relation to those guidelines (UK Health Security Agency research). Home routers transmit at similarly low power, and the level drops sharply with distance.
What the research shows
- In 2011, the WHO's cancer agency (IARC) classified radio-frequency fields as "possibly carcinogenic" (Group 2B), based on limited evidence from studies of heavy mobile phone use. The same category includes whole-leaf aloe vera extract and traditional Asian pickled vegetables.
- In 2024, a systematic review commissioned by the WHO and published in Environment International found no link between mobile phone use and brain cancer (summary from Australia's radiation safety agency). Phones held against the head give far higher exposure than a router across the room.
- Some scientists and advocacy groups dispute that review's methods, and research continues. It's fair to say the weight of evidence doesn't show harm at everyday exposure levels, and that monitoring goes on.
Simple steps if you'd like less anyway
Reducing exposure is easy and costs nothing, so it's a reasonable choice for any parent who wants peace of mind:
- Distance is everything. Doubling the distance from a device cuts its signal to about a quarter. Keep the router out of the bedroom if you can.
- Put the baby monitor at least a metre from the cot. That's also the usual safety advice for cords.
- Use a Wi-Fi schedule. Many routers can switch Wi-Fi off overnight.
- Airplane mode for tablets at night, or charge them outside the room.
- Wired where practical for TVs and computers.
The UK government also publishes practical guidance on reducing exposure to radio waves.
Check your own room
